The Niobrara shale formation extends into Nebraska, but significant Niobrara crude oil production has not yet been established. Most of the state's crude oil production comes from two small, southwestern counties—Hitchcock and Dundy—where companies have had success with three-dimensional seismic imaging.

Coal-fired facilities typically supply about two-thirds of Nebraska's electricity generation. Nearly all of the coal consumed in the state arrives by rail from Wyoming.
